Cutting the Grass & Keeping Your Word

I knew I would marry my husband the day he told me, “Babe, when we get married you will never have to cut the grass.” Done. Signed and sealed. Yes, please.

As I write this, I’m watching him do exactly that. Cutting the grass is one thing I never have to remind him to do. He takes care of it without a comment or conversation. He knows it needs to get done and just does it.

A lot of things have changed over the course of our marriage. Life is that way. We can never predict the curve balls or the trials we will face. Like most young married couples, we thought we would be the ones who didn’t change. Our love would carry us through. While I can honestly say I love my husband more today than I did on our wedding day, our young, puppy love is not what has sustained us.

Do you want to know what has never changed throughout our marriage? God’s love. He never changes. He is always by our side. He has sustained us and held us up when we thought we were drowning.

My husband’s promise to be the one to cut the grass is a small reminder of the Lord’s promises. He kept his word. God’s love shines through the steadfastness of my husband. I never want to take his faithfulness for granted.

What are some ways your spouse has kept his/her word throughout your marriage? How can you view these promises in light of the gospel?

Thoughts, Application & Scripture

Take some time to make of list of the ways your spouse has kept their word over the years. How do these promises shine light on the gospel? How does the Lord make Himself known in and through our marriages? How can you show your appreciation for promises kept to your spouse in the coming days and weeks?

We know that not every spouse is a promise keeper. If you find yourself in this boat, allow the Lord to fill those spaces. He will never leave us or forsake us. He always keeps his promises and wants us to lean on Him when our earthly relationships fall short.

2 Corinthians 1:20 “For all the promises of God find their yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.

Psalm 150:2 “Praise him for his mighty deeds; praise him according to his excellent greatness!”

Psalm 121:8 “The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore.”
